A shield tunneling machine with a diameter of 6.35 meters rolled off the production line in Changsha on September 12, 2024. This machine will be delivered to Cluj-Napoca, Romania's second-largest city, for use in local subway construction. It marks the first Chinese shield tunneling machine exported to Romania.

The tunnel of the Cluj-Napoca subway has a total length of about 21 kilometers, and 19 underground stations and an elevated one will be set up along the whole route.

The Cluj-Napoca subway project purchased two China-made shield tunneling machines, which will join the excavation of the subway section between Sfanta Maria to Europa Unit?. The machine will tunnel a one-way length of 5.6 kilometers, traversing complex strata of sand, gravel, salt mines and five fault fracture zones.? Additionally, it must address the challenges of continuous tunneling in sticky soil and turning in a small radius of 175 meters.

The machine was manufactured by the China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation Limited (CRCHI). The technician team customized solutions to tackle with the difficulties in construction, ensuring the machine can satisfy the construction demands.

In the first half of this year, CRCHI has seen a substantial growth in its overseas business, signing new contracts worth 2.153 billion yuan, up 77.15% year on year. It has made breakthroughs in the orders from Romania, Poland, Algeria, Azerbaijan and other countries. So far, CRCHI has exported 34 categories of products, including shield tunneling machine and mining equipment, to more than 40 countries and regions.
