2024 International Youth Forum on Creativity and Heritage Along the Silk Roads Opens

The 2024 International Youth Forum (IYF) on Creativity and Heritage Along the Silk Roads opened in Changsha on September 23. Gabriela Ramos, UNESCO's assistant director general for social and human sciences, and Chen Jie, vice minister of education and chairperson of the National Commission of the People's Republic of China for UNESCO, delivered speeches via video link. Zhou Haibing, vice governor of Hunan Province and mayor of Changsha City, attended the opening ceremony. Also present were Qin Changwei, secretary-general of the National Commission of the People's Republic of China for UNESCO; Du Yue, secretary-general of the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centres, and Associations (WFUCA); Changsha municipal leaders Chen Peng and Zhou Zhikai; and, Xu Fan, secretary-general of the Changsha Municipal People's Government. Sixty youth representatives from 53 countries along the Belt and Road (including China), representatives from the member cities of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, and young volunteers also participated.

The year 2024 marks the beginning of a new decade for the Belt and Road Initiative. This forum aimed to further study, publicize, and implement the spirit of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, act on the spirit of President Xi Jinping's instructions on continued hosting of the IYF made at the opening ceremony of the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, and promote the construction of Changsha as a 'City of Media Arts' and an international cultural and creative center.?

The 2024 IYF is scheduled to take place in Changsha and Nanjing successively from September 22 to 28. The forum is co-hosted by the UNESCO, the National Commission of the People's Republic of China for UNESCO, the WFUCA, the Changsha Municipal People's Government, and the Nanjing Municipal People's Government.

The Changsha events include an opening ceremony, a high-level forum, a youth gala, a youth sharing session, a parallel forum among representatives of member cities of the Creative Cities Network, and an achievements presentation. Activities such as cultural experiences featuring Changsha's intangible cultural heritage, a night tour of Tianxin Pavilion, and a showcase of "culture + technology" integration will also be organized, allowing participants to feel the unique demeanor of Changsha.
