On the morning of March 26, a special life transfer was taking place in the stem cell collection room of the Hematology Department of Xiangya Third Hospital, Central South University. a pair of four and a half years old identical twin sisters sat on a hospital bed, drawing on their sketchpads while donating peripheral hematopoietic stem cells to save their mother battling acute leukemia. This marks the hospital’s first case of two young twins donating stem cells simultaneously to save an adult patient.

Typically, a child donor’s weight should be at least one-third of the recipient’s, but these girls didn’t meet that requirement. So, we decided to collect stem cells from both genetically identical sisters," explained Dr. Li Ying, associate professor at the hospital’s Hematology Department. A single child’s stem cell volume wouldn’t suffice for an adult transplant, while sequential collections could delay treatment.

After thorough discussions with multidisciplinary experts, the medical team opted for a synchronized stem cell mobilization strategy. This method ensured that both girls could donate at the same time, minimizing pain from repeated procedures while providing enough stem cells to support their mother’s recovery.

What moved everyone was how bravely the girls behaved. Though they usually cry during vaccinations, they stayed completely still during the stem cell collection, knowing they were there to "save Mommy." When asked if the needle hurt, one softly shook her head and whispered, "We're protecting Mommy together."(翻譯:潘曉慧)
